A gunman charged on stage at a packed nightclub and opened fire on the band and the crowd, killing top heavy metal guitarist "Dimebag" Darrell Abbott and three other people before a police officer shot him to death, authorities and witnesses said.
In one of the bigger tragedies to strike music since last year's fire at a Great White club gig, Abbott, a former member of the seminal metal band Pantera, was gunned down on stage while playing with his new band Damageplan.
Damageplan, which also had as a member Abbott's brother and Pantera drummer Vinnie Paul, was playing a show in Columbus when a clubgoer decided to send Dimebag to the cemetery gates.
Reactions from the metal community have obviously been ones of shock, but how much did the aggressive aspects of Pantera's music have to do with what transpired? Their 1992 album Vulgar Display Of Power had a picture of a man punching another in the face on its cover. Is that much different than shooting another man (of course, it is, but it's still violence)?
Regardless of what you think of hardcore metal, Dimebag Darrell was one of the greatest guitarists of his generation. This event truly is a tragedy, but if a silver lining can be found, it's that Pantera was able to amass a good body of work before his death, so at least Dimebag Darrell's music will live on.
